A Year Underwater

This calendar, A Year Underwater, was designed with great love for the sea and for nature, and with deep respect for the animals living just below the surface.

During my marine biology studies, I discovered the Mediterranean Sea and its abundance, and I fell in love. Since then, I've spent every moment I can visiting it.

The great secret I have to share is simple: Go to the sea as often as you can.

It's a simple equation: the more time you spend in the water, the more you'll see. And the more you learn where and when to go, the more you'll want to discover.

The abundance here is endless, and it’s a true joy that we have so much sea to explore. Each month, you’ll encounter a special phenomenon that takes place at one or more of Israel's beaches, from the appearance of guitarfish in the fall to the octopus season in the spring, and other exciting surprises along the way.

...About me

I’m Inbal Raz – mom to Yama, partner to Eilam, underwater photographer, video editor, and marine biologist. I’ve always felt pulled toward the underwater world. Going beneath the waves is like stepping into another universe – quiet, calm, moving at its own rhythm. I love the flow of the water, the bubbles rising, the rush of movement and then the silence when everything fades away. I bought my first camera just before heading off to the Philippines for my Divemaster course. A month before, I had to cancel because of the first COVID rumors. So instead, I took the camera for its very first dive here in the Mediterranean. In a little rock pool I photographed feet and tiny transparent fish. Since then, the journey has been wild. I’ve photographed in Eilat and Kenya, the Andaman Islands, Mexico, the Socorro Islands in Baja California, Mozambique, Sri Lanka, Mauritius – and mostly right here in my backyard, the Mediterranean, along the Carmel coast. Along the way, I also became a marine biologist. The more I learned about the ocean, the deeper I fell in love with it. For me, photography is a way to open a window into a world that’s still wild – to show the beauty and uniqueness of nature, almost untouched by humans. It feels like co-creating with the sea itself, endless and mysterious. I work with natural light, using the play of sunrays on the surface to frame each shot. These days, I dive and explore the depths whenever I can. On my website, you’ll find fine art prints from Israel and around the world – available in different sizes, framed or unframed, delivered straight to your door. I also photograph underwater maternity sessions, children diving, and water therapists – both in the sea and in pools across Israel.
